BenQ's business unit has launched its fourth in a series of laser projectors targeted for golf simulators, this time filling the need for a highly affordable model that works with small-to midsize simulation spaces.

The BenQ LH820ST, available for $1,899, is a 1080p (1920x1080)-resolution single-chip DLP projector with 3,600 ANSI lumen brightness. Thanks to its 90% specified coverage of the Rec.709 color space, it's said to provide excellent color for course graphics and may be a suitable option for mixed golf-sim/home theater entertainment spaces, though, unlike some full HD projectors, the LH820ST lacks support for HDR or signals beyond 1080p/60. As with earlier BenQ golf sim projectors, the LH820ST has a dedicated Golf picture mode that optimizes the lush greens and vivid blues found in golf sim graphics. Dynamic contrast is rated at 3 million:1. The sealed laser-phosphor light engine is IP5X rated to combat severe dust conditions, and offers 20,000 hours of lifetime at full power or 30,000 hours in Eco mode. There are no filters to clean or swap.

With its fixed 0.5:1 short throw lens, the LH820ST offers a 16:9 image ranging from 21.75 to 220 inches diagonal, with throw distance ranging from 0.8 feet to 8.0 feet, making it a good fit for many tight garage and basement sims. A 100-inch image is achievable at 3 feet, 8 inches from the lens. There's no optical zoom or lens shift, but to support installation flexibility the projector has digital shrink and shift tools to allow movement of the image by up to 0.5%, as well as 2D keystone correction up to ±30 degrees on both the horizontal and vertical axes, and corner fit geometric correction. Its Screen Fill feature allows the projector to communicate a native aspect ratio to the simulator or widescreen home theater video source of 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 16:10 to properly match the screen in use and minimize scaling artifacts. The LH820ST is also well-suited to sims that require a floor-mounted projector due to space restrictions.

Input connections include one HDMI version 1.4b port, as well as legacy component, S-video, and composite video inputs. Input latency is specified as a low of 16.7 milliseconds in Fast Mode to ensure best performance with golf simulations and games, though at the cost of deactivating the keystone and geometry correction. There's also a small built in speaker and audio output.

The BenQ LH820ST is being sold now from authorized resellers. It joins three other BenQ laser golf simulator projectors, including the 4K-resolution LK936ST offering 5,100 lumens, and the LU935ST and LU710 WUXGA models at 5,500 and 4,000 lumens respectively.
