BenQ LK836ST front left NPA

BenQ is releasing its first laser projector designed specifically for use with golf simulators—the LK936ST. The burgeoning golf projector market comes with its own set of difficulties—namely ambient light, resolution needs and color accuracy for realism, and projector positioning and picture adjustment to avoid golf club swings. BenQ addresses these and includes a specific golf picture mode.

The LK936ST, which we awarded Best of Show honors for InfoComm 2021, is a 4K projector rated for 5,100 ANSI lumens and a 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It uses a blue laser with phosphor light engine that is guaranteed to last for 20,000 hours (30,000 hours in Eco) with no maintenance necessary, and powers up and off quickly. The optical engine is sealed, filterless, and IPX5 rated to keep it clean from any dust that might be present in the install location—very often a garage or basement. In addition to the high brightness of the LK936ST to combat ambient light, the projector covers 92% of the Rec.709 color gamut, supports HDR10, and includes a golf mode button that enhances the colors found most on the golf course—blue skies and green grass.

A 0.81-0.89:1 short throw ratio and 1.1x zoom allows the LK936ST to project a 10-foot tall image from 14.5 feet and is capable of a 300-inch diagonal—or just over 14 feet high (to check throw distance you can use the ProjectorCentral BenQ LK936ST Throw Distance Calculator). To make sure the projected image properly fits the screen, the LK936ST includes a digital image shrink, vertical and horizontal keystone correction, four-point corner correction, and an optical lens shift of 60% of the height and 23% of the width.

Connections on the back includes two HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 (one with ARC), a DisplayPort 1.2a, a USB, S/PDIF optical out, 3.5 mm audio out, Ethernet, HDBaseT, 3D VESA in and out, 3.5 mm wired remote in and out, and a 12V trigger.

The BenQ LK936ST is available for pre-order now with an expected release later this month. It's MSRP is $5,849.

Would this be any good as a regular home theater projector? There are so few non-ultra short throw 4K projectors out there. I’ve been looking for YEARS for something decent in the 0.8 throw ratio range. No HDMI 2.1 seems like it could be one potential issue.

Bob, these BenQ's have a variety of picture modes and one of the options BenQ has been promoting is dual use for a simulator/theater setup. If you download the user manual from the database page on our site you can get a feel for whether they have a reasonably accurate mode for movies/TV content, and whether there are any grayscale or CMS color adjustments that would allow for a (hopefully) accurate calibration. But at the end of the day this is a relatively high output commercial projector built for viewing in a bright room, and it may not have the contrast performance meeting the criteria for a traditional home theater projector designed for a 100-150 inch screen. We are seeing some additional (albeit less bright) 4K short throw consumer models coming out now from BenQ, Optoma, and ViewSonic, in part to address temporary gaming setups as well as demand for golf sims, and I think you'll see more in the near future. You should use our Find a Projector database to search specifically for 4K models (lamp or laser) in the throw range you are looking for and see what comes up at this time. I can't say with certainty without doing the search, but you might be surprised to find a model or two now are what you want.
