Optoma has introduced the world's most compact RGB triple laser projectors. Housed in a tiny 6.18 x 2.68 x 5.31-inch cabinet weighing just 2.2 pounds, the ML1080 ($999), a ProjectorCentral InfoComm Best of Show Award winner, and its short-throw sibling ML1080ST ($1,149), boast the wide BT.2020 color gamut typically claimed for RGB laser projection, but in a form factor and low price point not usually seen for this architecture.

Offering 1080p resolution and 1,200 lumens brightness (said to be the brightest at its size), these single-chip DLP portables should come in handy for a variety of applications where color saturation counts, such as art and immersive installations or business presentations where the strong impact of graphics and photography are required to make an impression.

Both projectors feature ToF (Time-of-Flight) data sensors to provide fast and accurate auto-focus and auto-keystone adjustments. The ML1080 uses a fixed focal-length lens with a 1.2:1 throw ratio; it throws images from 60- to 100-inches diagonal, and requires a throw distance of 8 feet, 9 inches for a 100-inch image. The ML1080ST has a 0.78:1 short throw lens that requires only 5 feet, 8 inches for the same 100-inch image. Along with automatic ToF adjustments, the projectors feature manual four-corner geometric correction for easy set-up in challenging environments. Furthermore, power is provided via USB-C connection, making the ML1080 and ML1080ST compatible with power bank batteries (PD 3.0) to speed set up for professional presentations or for watching videos or movies in outdoor environments.

Connections include one HDMI port, an additional USB-C for video input, a powered USB-A for use with an optional WiFi dongle (not included), and another USB-A for media playback. A mini-USB is provided for RS232C control via an included adaptor, which make the projectors compatible with Optoma's Optoma Management Suite (OMS) fleet management software. A 3.5 mm audio output is provided, but there's also a built in utility speaker.

With the addition of the WiFi dongle, the projectors enjoy wireless sharing with Optoma's Creative Cast feature, allowing for simultaneous image, document and screen-sharing from up to four devices on the same network. There's also a signage mode that enables instant slideshow functionality for images and video.

Along with their impressive technology, the ML1080 and ML1080ST were designed with sustainability in mind, and possess the lowest carbon footprint of any product within the Optoma portfolio, the company says, utilizing 58% less electricity when compared to their lamp projectors. The cabinets use 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, and the projectors have been awarded by the Red Dot Design, Green Good Design and IF Design award programs.

Both the ML1080 and ML1080ST will be available in September.
